Health Myths - Must know facts

People might unconsciously learn health myths and they ritually follow them in their day to day life. Some of the myths sounds true, but in reality it is not and the scientific research shows the opposite effect in some cases. We will have a look at it to understand better.

Pot belly, all of us would have heard the saying, if you want to wipe out your pot belly, wake up early morning and go for sit-ups exercise. This is not true and even if you go for 500 sit-ups every day, it won’t go to wipe off even a layer of your belly fat. The only way to rid out of pot belly is doing cardiovascular exercises which make you to sweat and slowly the fat gets diluted.

Carbohydrates, this is one of the much needed foods in our daily life. But, the myth is if we take more carbo foods then we will put up weight. Actually, the carbohydrates won’t add fat, but if the starchy foods like cream added along with carbo foods then it becomes fatty. Since carbo foods tend to be more filling, it helps to reduce the intake and it will add necessary calories at the same time.

Water, this is a very essential drink for us to be alive, but there should be a limit. Here the myth is we need to drink eight glasses of water a day. But there is no backing research available to prove this myth as a fact. Our body used to take water from tea, coffee, juice or even beer. One litre of water per day is adequate for our body to be active. Excess of water might become dangerous sometimes.

Slow Metabolism, there is myth that fat people have slower metabolism and they can't act fast as slim personality. But, this is not true and the fat people have more energy and they move fast to burn off more calories.

Pregnant woman, this is very popular myth that if a woman is pregnant she has to eat for the two, i.e. she needs to feed her child by doubling her intake. This is again not true and an extra 250 calories a day is enough to have adequate energy.

Vitamins, there are saying that if you want to live long, eat vitamins. In actual, Vitamins are no way going to help to live longer or extend your life. But vitamins help to keep you healthy. It is better to have the vitamins through natural fruits, cereal etc.

Sugar, I know, no human in this World dislikes sugar, especially children. But, unfortunately the myth is if the kids take more sugar, they will be hyperactive. The excessive sugar might affect our health in other way around. But it won’t affect children’s behavior and won't make them hyperactive.

Sneeze, we all sneeze at least a time in a day. Here, the myth is when we sneezes our heart stops a second. This is again not true and the fact is when you sneeze your chest gets expanded due to high inhale and shrinks when you exhale. But the heart keeps beating to make you alive.

There might be more health myths in your locality / country; I wish you can share them here in comments to create awareness.

My doctor told me that my metabolism is in permanent starvation mode b/c of my mom putting me on diets all the time when I was still a child. All those restricted calories has fooled my metabolism into thinking I'll never eat again, so I have to work 10x harder to lose weight. And I just loathe exercise and love sweets. Yet if you saw me eat, you'd wonder why I am not thin since I eat lots of fruits/veggies and small portions. It sucks. I'm so glad my man is a chubby chaser!

Yeah many years ago I was drinking 2 litres of water a day and I was getting so many terrible headaches the doctor told me I was drinking more water than my body needed and to cut it down. It took me a long bloody time to get it into Tim's head that sit ups do not make ones gut slimmer.

I drink 2-3 litres of water a day, but that is all I drink and I work out for 2 hours a day, so that evens out.

Very interesting list... I agree with most of them... However, I do take vitamins to enhance what I don't get enough of in the way of healthy foods. Older women especially need Vitamin D and Vitamin B12.

I eat the healthy carbs --but stay away from the 'whites' (potatoes, pasta, rice)... Instead I use the whole grains when it comes to pasta and rice --and eat sweet potatoes instead of white ones.

Hugs,
Betsy

Excellent post. Seems eating, food programs, making healthy choices and diets will always be with us. Oh and food, too.

I heard somewhere that coughing is supposed to help when there is an onset of a heart attack. You have to be trained though to do it properly.
